Who we areThe Association
The Business Association of São Tomé and Príncipe (”AESTP”) was officially incorporated on February 11th 2015 in the city of São Tomé, Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, in the official presence of His Excellency The Minister of Economy and International Cooperation, Mr. Agostinho Fernandes.
This project arose from a private initiative driven by multiple São Tomé and Príncipe’s entrepreneurs who began, in October 2014, a series of discussions regarding the current state of the country’s economy, having concluded that, despite all intentions, the stagnation in the country would be harmful for economic development, naturally affecting the business community.
Questions like political instability, the management boards’ lack of preparation to promote the country abroad or even the inactivity of the organisms responsible for such promotion, led to the establishment of an innovative endeavor that, whilst in recognition of the private sector’s essential role, could contribute to solving all of these problems.
AESTP was established with a primordial mission to promote the business activity in the country, working as a platform for its associates to promote their businesses. It also acts as a tool to attract foreign investment and as a business cooperation structure, aims to become the preferential intermediate between the companies and the government of São Tomé and Príncipe.
Also as a AESTP’s mission comes the support provided to foreign investors in the country, with the identification of business and investment opportunities on national ground. On the other hand, but equally important, is the support given by AESTP to the internationalization of national companies, promoting exports and the establishment of business relations with international companies that allow São Tomé and Príncipe’s trade balance to achieve a more stable equilibrium.
AESTP had 29 associates by the moment of its incorporation. After experiencing an exponential growth, by the end of May it had already achieved the trust of 51 companies, while now, several applications are still being reviewed.
The challenges are vast, but the trust of our associates, the established partnership with the authorities and the international interest in our project are assuring to the success of our endeavor, always concerning the economic development of São Tomé and Príncipe.
